definition: (noun) an explanation of the topic or purpose of a research paper
If you are teaching an Advanced Placement (AP) English course in one of the state’s best high schools and the majority of your students – the best and the brightest the school has to offer – just can’t seem to understand what it is you are looking for, then maybe the problem isn’t them. Maybe, just maybe, it’s you.
I’m just saying… the fact that I have spent the past three hours walking my child (an 11th grader who has breezed through every AP course the high school has to offer without complaining and rarely ever asking for help) through the basics of what a thesis statement is while being met at every turn with cries of “I know that… but it’s not what she wants” hasn’t helped my attitude.
Anyway… that’s my thesis. I hope I don’t have to develop this idea further. With the teacher. Or the teacher and an administrator.

Oh but Bowden you’re just a parent. What do you know about kids?
While that is firmly tongue in cheek I’ve had to deal with that sort of thing before.
Of course, English Teachers…thats a whole ‘nuther topic.
Don’t even ask me about assigning research papers to my college students! (Hint: it’s painful to read what they have attempted to write; I don’t have time to teach them psychology AND what they should have learned in high school about writing research papers.)
You should let them text it in. The papers would probably make way more sense 2U!
Not that texting has anything to do with decreased English skills or anything…
I’ve got much sympathy for ya! I can barely help my 7 year old with her math. Ha!
