Oklahoma Hero

By bowden mcelroy | Dec 8, 2006

The December 7, 2006 edition of the Tulsa World had this article about the “first official heroes of World War II”:

Ken Taylor was one of only two American pilots able to take off and fight back during the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Sixty-five years later, despite Taylor’s recent death, a friend is still trying to get the U.S. military to award him the Medal of Honor.

Gen. Taylor, USAF Ret., a native Oklahoman, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006 in Tucson of natural causes. A friend, John Meek (also an Okie) has been lobbying Congress to award General Taylor and his squadron mate, George S. Welch, the Medal of Honor.
