My wife went back to school when our oldest was a senior in high school. Which means I’ve had at least one person – and most of the time two people – in college for the past eight years.
Two in college for the past eight years is just another way of saying I am continually broke.
So… the topic of the day is “cheap dates”.
What are your favorite cheap budget friendly dates? (For a definition of “date” see yesterday’s blog entry.)
Here’s a few ideas to get you started.

Those are some great ideas!
Of course, you heard my idea from yesterday–a bike ride. But there is a walk in the park–we like River Parks best of all, and there is a nice little cafe there where you can sit and have a drink and enjoy the river.
McNellies, which is downtown, has $3 hamburger night. Burger and fries, three bucks. We go there every so often.
Tonight, at the campus of ORU, there is a free guitar demonstration, put on by the Tulsa Guitar Society. We’re both into guitar, so we’re going to check it out. It is free.
My wife and I are both the outdoors type so for us a weekend away from home in a tent next to a river or lake is great. There are some really neat camping/wilderness areas around broken bow, grand lake, and tablerock and beaver lakes in arkansas. If we are really strapped for cash then we just go to dripping springs lake near okmulgee to save on the cost of gas.
Speaking of the river parks the platform right by the cafe jasonk wrote about is where I proposed to my wife. We like to go there to reminisce from time to time as well even though we dont live in tulsa anymore.
Before Brookside got covered up with bars it was a pretty nice place to walk. Woodward park is a really nice place to go in the spring. And I don’t know about now, but used to Webers on Peoria had the best onion rings you ever put in your mouth.
Now we’re just happy if we can get a few minutes at the end of the day to sit and talk…that dating thing is tough.

I used to live near Broken Bow, and went fishing at Beavers Bend all the time. I miss that.
Camping is great! And we have a small camper that we need to take out more often.
Jesse, you said you used to live in Tulsa. Where do you live now?
Josh, I am partial to the Onion Rings at Cheddars, if you can get past the traffic on 71st. But Webers is still serving up great burgers and Root Beer on Brookside. I still like it, in spite of the buildup. Crow Creek is a great place to sit and eat queso, if you can get a table outside. The Brook is great, but I miss their outdoor seating.
I live in between sapulpa and kellyville now, but when my wife and I walked/biked riverside a lot we lived at 91st and riverside. And by the way Webers suasage cheeseburgers are awesome.
We’re practically neighbors. We live between Sand Springs and Sapulpa. I ride my bike out your way sometimes.
I’m sure this will come as a shock but my wife and I like to go to Starbucks.
Every Wednesday (2-for-1 night) at Cozumel Restaurant 2 minutes from home. Peg is never too tired to cook .. she cooks dinner for that 8 of our family that are here, so its ready after church on Sunday. But we do go out every Wednesday as it’s a bargain and it’s kind of “our restaurant”.
We will, on occasion, go to Starbuck’s in the next town. 10 minutes away. They have a sitting area with overstuffed chairs (never did know what that really meant) and a coffee table (well duuuuh…) and we sit there and watch traffic and just talk.
Summertimes we sit on our back deck .. it’s pretty big and screened in … and nurse a cup of coffee for an hour and just talk and sit.
We do go out to eat at other times in the week .. probably twice on the average. I’ll just ask her if she want to go out and she always says yes (note: I am careful not to ask if she’s started supper already).
We’re blessed to be able to afford to do that, but we don’t go to shows or other expensive stuff.
The Blonde and I enjoy Panera Bread. Coffee, dessert, and conversation… good times.
Feeding the ducks!
Bob, that screened in back porch sounds wonderful! No wonder you’ve been married so long.
Bowden, Panera is the best. Its such a great place to go on a rainy Saturday, sitting and sipping on coffee.
Last night, we went to the guitar thing. It was not what I expected, but it was good nonetheless. And I really didn’t think Lisa would like it, since it was mostly classical music and all instrumental. But I could tell that she appreciated the fact that I had made the time and taken the effort to spend time just the two of us. That was the sweetest thing.
The porch thing, sitting and talking, is just the best. My grandpa built a real screened in ‘sleeping porch’ on his house that was perfect for mosquito free outdoor family meetings. I can’t see ever buying a house without one.

Another point: we don’t always talk. Sometimes we just sit in the cool evening breeze, with the rustling of the trees and occasional city sounds off in the distance. It really is a delightful place to be, as our house is surrounded by fairly dense trees on 3 sides. I think the value of that, particularly since we’ve gotten to a place where we can pretty much go where we want and do what we want, is that Peg knows, at that moment, there’s no other place on earth I’d rather be, and nobody else I’d rather be with. I don’t think talk adds much to that.
Of course, I realize the same thing about her.
When she first got BC, we started going away every March to someplace really nice, usually the Caribbean. We’ve done it once or twice a year for 9 or 10 years. That changed 4 years ago to January, but this year, we didn’t even do that.
I should add that I’m not “crazy in love”. We do what we do because we want above all to obey God.
Wow. Does it ever WORK!
ps: My dad told me a line before I got married that’s worth repeating. He said that, for teens, a guy running out of gas on a back road, was romance. But it’s not. When you’ve been married 40 years, the kids are gone, and you’re cuddled on a couch .. and THEN the guy runs out of gas … well .. THAT’s romance.
It’s true.
