Mastering Marriage: Part I

By bowden mcelroy | May 16, 2006

Part one of Mastering Marriage, For Every Couple Who Wants to Grow Happier and More in Love Each Year covers the first four chapters. So far, it’s been a quick and easy read.

Mike and Charlie (yes, they are a husband-wife team: “Charlie”, for reasons I don’t understand, is a nickname for Carol) take four short chapters to explain who they are and why they wrote this book.

There are three things you need to know about the authors before you read Mastering Marriage. I have no idea what their spiritual background is. They briefly mention being married by a minister, but so far they have said nothing more about religion, church, or spirituality. This is a secular book intended for a wide audience.

Mike and Charlie can certainly be considered marriage educators, but neither is a mental health professional. They are both business people who have been married 25 years. This appears to be a second marriage for both.

The book is a very direct, common sense approach to making ones marriage work. That’s the one thing I like about it so far. Sometimes we professionals get too caught up in “underlying issues” or in the theology of marriage and forget to “make it simple”.
