Marital Conversation

By bowden mcelroy | Sep 12, 2006

“I’m just not good at conversation. Not really much of a talker.”

The young man who made this statement was sitting in my office next his wife. His wife was nodding her head vigorously in agreement. “He really doesn’t talk much.”

Oh, really? Didn’t you just tell me the reason for seeking counseling was his emotional affair with another woman? Wasn’t there something about hours-long cell phone calls and innumerable text messages?

The problem isn’t that he doesn’t talk; the problem is he isn’t talking with his wife.

So what’s the deal with text messaging?! Part of the conflict in our couple-friends involved just this medium of flirtation. Are you seeing a lot of that in your practice?

Nice bedside (couchside?) manner by the way…

Seeing a lot more texting in affairs. Must be the quiet, clandestine manner of the communication.

I think the internet and mobile communication has made the path to infidelity a lot smoother.

    Jared,
“…made the path to infidelity a lot smoother.” Nice turn of phrase.
