In Support of Marriage

I’m just not sure what to think of this news article: Marriage Art Contest Ruffles School Officials.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families is prepared to spend money in support of healthy marriages. The idea is that healthy, functional marriages will prevent social ills.

So a social service organization in Elkton, Md. snagged some grant money to host a children’s art contest through the public schools.

The school initially declined.

The school’s reasoning was it would be inappropriate for the school system to promote a contest that deals with a subject outside the purview of the state curriculum. If I thought this meant they don’t do anything other than reading, writing, and arithmetic I could support their initial decision.

In all likelihood, the school meant that while they encourage various diversity and feel-good programs, healthy marriages between a man and a woman just wasn’t on their radar.

In any event, the school decided to change their minds… limited support of the institution of marriage might not be too subversive.
