Holiday Blues: 2

By bowden mcelroy | Nov 21, 2007

holiday_depression.jpgSo I did the radio show this morning… and it was a lot of fun. Gwen and Seth put me at ease and the hour passed quickly.

Of course, I didn’t really get a chance to touch my notes; call-in shows kind of take on a life of their own. Instead of talking about this:

Strategies to Minimize Holiday Blues

1. Create new traditions

2. Focus on what God expects of you

3. Boycott the mall!

4. Set aside time to grieve

5. Be proactive in preventing lonliness

… we ended up talking about basic marriage and relationship issues:

Clear communication

Effective problem solving

Expectations that are too high lead to stress; stress acts as a magnifying glass and exacerbates any underlying problems the relationship may have.

Every couple needs to “cut the apron strings” and place their family priorities above their families-of-origin.

My only complaint was that I felt like I was using too many sweeping generalizations; but that may just be the nature of interviews. It was fun though; I’d do it again in a heart beat.

You were a pleasure to listen to, and I hope they bring you back often.

That “Create new traditions” point reminds me of Festivus with its annual “Airing of Grievances.”

    Michael,

    Thanks!

(I’m thinking more feats of strength. And since some of my siblings are the same age as my children… it could get very embarressing.)

Did your segment go into the third hour (which appears to not have been posted yet)? The end of the 2nd hour made it sound like it isn’t the end of your segment.

I was there from 7:30a to 8:30a; I guess that’s part of the third hour.

Some thoughts after listening to the first half hour.

    1) Talk radio banter is universally rotten.

    2) It is Bow(tie pasta)-den not Bow(before the King)-den

    3) After hearing about the guy’s wife who threatens divorce every Thanksgiving, I’m thinking that some of our own family traditions aren’t so bad.

    Taran,

I can’t believe you actually listened to that!

My first thought – when the guy said he’s been threatened with divorce every Thankgiving – was that he had been divorced from 19 different women.

Either way, he’s got a big problem.

    Bowden,

I enjoyed hearing you in your natural habitat. Your voice matches your blog persona perfectly. As the guy was asking his question, I couldn’t help but to wonder what you were thinking.
