First Aid for Emotional Hurts: Overview

By bowden mcelroy | Nov 25, 2008

A few weeks ago I received an email from Randall House Publications: would I mind reviewing a new book they have published? Not at all; give me a free book and I’ll read it and share my thoughts on this blog.

First Aid for Emotional Hurts: Helping People Through Difficult Times by Edward Moody is a short (230 pages) paperback written for lay-counselors. Dr. Moody’s intended audience appears to be elders, deacons, small group leaders, and others in a congregation that interact with hurting people.  In other words, it is written for every Christian.

Key concepts covered are:

  1. What to do when you don’t know what to do.
  2. What to do when you are in over your head.
  3. Real Faith
  4. Getting proactive: developing resilience
  5. When getting down gets dangerous.
  6. Breaking the deadly cycle.
  7. Helping people with problems we do not understand
  8. Helping people overcome grief and loss
  9. Helping people survive and thrive
  10. helping families survive and thrive

Edward (Eddie) Moody has a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in Counselor Education, a M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Middle Tennessee State University and a B.A. in Pastoral Training from Free Will Bible Baptist College. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor in North Carolina. Dr. Moody is the pastor of Tippett’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church and a faculty member of the Department of Counselor Education at North Carolina State University.

In addition to the book, Dr. Moody has a free discussion guide available for download at his web site.

I’m looking forward to reading this book and will be posting a chapter-by-chapter review in the coming weeks.
