Financial Pressures

By bowden mcelroy | Apr 7, 2006

This Lifeway article, Financial Pressures, is the fifth in a series on a survey they have done:The Top 10 Issues Facing Today’s Family.

Why are we stressed about money? We are stressed because it is a good indicator of priorities based in our earthly desires. And further, our earthly desires can be powerfully misleading forces in the decisions we make daily with our finances.

I don’t have too much of a problem with the above statement. I just don’t think it goes far enough.

Certainly financial problems and debt can create stress. The stress of marital discord is of greater significance.

The worst stress occurs when a couple cannot agree on how to manage their money. It doesn’t seem to matter whether a couple has a little or a lot: disagreement and arguments over how to handle money/debt creates problems.

I’ve seen couples with A LOT of money left over after all the bills were paid who could never agree on how to spend/save/invest their surplus.

And, I’ve seen couples with barely two nickles to rub together minimize stress through cooperative problem solving.

It’s not the amount of money; it is the degree of disagreement that damages families.

My husband and I have never really had an argument about money…not in almost 8 years of marriage…even when he was laid off from his job, and we went into a debt repayment program and *gasp* had no DSL, satellite, cell phones..etc…we didn’t fight about money…I think the reason is, we trust(ed) God to handle all our needs, and He does, without fail…our money seemed to start handling itself when we started titheing…hmmm…coincidence??? I think not…
